Indian filmmaker Hansal Mehta is known for bestowing the world with a masterpiece, “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”. Has his latest creation, “Scoop,” surpassed the brilliance of Scam 1992? You bet it has. Netflix is back with another crime web series Scoop which is making many headlines right now. For all the right reasons? Indeed for all the right reasons. It is another powerful series based on real-life crime.
Furthermore, it focuses on the complexities and realities of print journalism, the underworld, as well as the Mumbai police. If you are curious about it all, you are in for a treat. Here is the Scoop review for you.
Scoop Story
Based on the book Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison, Netflix’s Scoop retells the story of a renowned crime reporter Jigna Vohra. Back in 2011, Jigna’s colleague and famous journalist Jyotirmoy Dey-fondly known as J. Dey, was murdered in broad daylight by members of the Chhota Rajan gang. Furthermore, after a few months of this horrifying murder, Jigna was arrested as the main suspect in the murder case. In addition to having faced 7 years of humiliation (many of which were spent in Jail), Jigna was finally declared free of all charges. This Netflix web series is all about it. The struggles of Jigna, the rivalries in print journalism, the realities of the underworld, and the Mumbai police. In the series, Jigna is addressed as Jagruti Pathak (portrayed by Karishma Tanna). In addition, Jyotirmoy Dey is addressed as Jaideb Sen (portrayed by Prosenjit Chatterjee).
Scoop Review
Scoop is a beyond praiseworthy creation by Hansal Mehta as well as Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul. The way they portray the realities of print journalism is beyond praiseworthy. Journalists often have to sacrifice a lot to make it to the page 1 byline of newspapers. This often leads to jealousy among many journalists. So much so that one even has to battle unjustified accusations. Scoop very well showcase it. The struggling tale of Jagruti, the deputy bureau chief at Eastern Age, is inspiring yet mind-numbing. Furthermore, Karishma Tanna does a fantastic job portraying all the emotions Jagruti (Jigna) went through in Prison. It would be thrilling to see how it took her a 7-year-long legal battle to be acquitted of all charges.
Even in the hardest of times, Jagruti has the full support of her family. They are the one who believes that she is innocent. This sixth episodic season is supposed to come up with another one. It is safe to say that the fans cannot keep calm. The best part of this web series is that it is based on facts and is free of any kind of melodrama. It would not be wrong to say that this was Karishma Tanna’s best career work. Other noteworthy performers, of course, were Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Harman Baweja, and Tannishtha Chatterjee.
Based on evidence and facts, the narration of Scoop is gripping at the same time, thought-provoking. The last episode might feel like a long one as it is full of information. Nonetheless, the show is a big must-watch.
Final Verdict
All in all, it can be said that the tale of this single mother and divorcee is nothing but commendable. Hansal Mehta does a pathbreaking job that has indeed set the bar way too high now. We give the web series Scoop 4 stars out of 5.
