The entertainment world is abuzz again, and this time, it’s a clash between two of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated names—Lady Superstar Nayanthara and the versatile Dhanush. What started as a professional disagreement on the sets of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan early a decade ago has now exploded into a public and legal feud, bringing their complicated relationship into the spotlight once more.
A Promising Start That Turned Sour
Back in 2015, Naanum Rowdy Dhaanseemed like a dream collaboration. Produced by Dhanush, it had Nayanthara in the lead, and since Vignesh Shivan was directing, it was more than an exciting project that would change everything for everyone. For Nayanthara, it would be a comeback after many difficult experiences. For Vignesh Shivan, it was a maiden attempt to prove himself as a director. For Dhanush, it’d be another hit as a producer.
On the face of things, everything was fine. Then again, in the background, cracks start surfacing. An insider’s account claims that Dhanush was upset because the movie had exceeded the budget by several notches. Dhanush turned down more money needed for the film’s completion. Nayanthara reportedly financed it herself. The movie eventually became a chartbuster. This turned Nayanthara into a fixture in the industry and laid the foundation for her later life with Vignesh, whom she would eventually marry.
The personal and professional tension, however, subsisted. According to some reports, at an award show, Nayanthara made a sly comment about her producer not liking her acting—an apparent jab at Dhanush, who was sitting in the audience. That was the moment that symbolized the chasm quietly forming between the two.
The Fallout Reignites
Fast forward to 2024. From marrying Vignesh Shivan and becoming a mother to twin boys, Nayanthara is now getting ready for the release of her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale. The documentary gives a close-up and personal look into her life, including her love story with Vignesh. However, when she sought Dhanush’s permission to use behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, he refused to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC), citing unresolved grievances.
After two years of trying to obtain his approval, Nayanthara included a brief three-second clip from the movie set, which was recorded on her phone. This decision triggered Dhanush to file a legal notice demanding Rs 10 crore in damages. Hurt and frustrated, Nayanthara took to social media, penning an open letter in which she accused Dhanush of letting personal grudges interfere with her professional life. “I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage,” she wrote—a line that has since gone viral.

As the controversy gained momentum, industry insiders and fans began taking sides. Shruti Haasan and Aishwarya Rajesh came to Nayanthara’s defense, protesting how women are treated in a workplace where personal relationships creep into professional choices. Others chose to keep mum; the question, it seems, is way deeper than it appears.
The conflict has also changed the documentary. What started as an all-inclusive deep dive on Nayanthara and Vignesh’s wedding was turned upside down by Netflix and altered to be based on the general story of Nayanthara, celebrating her resilience and achievements.
A Bigger Conversation About Boundaries
This battle between two icons in Tamil cinema goes much beyond a court case. It unfolds how personal relationships can convert workplace conflicts into highly polarized reality. The core of the film industry is based on the principle of collaboration, but even the most celebrated productions can be hurt by unresolved emotions and clashing egos.
Nayanthara describes this documentary as celebrating her journey, struggles, and triumphs. For Dhanush, the project would ensure the protection of his interests coupled with a review of some unresolved matters from the past that need attention.
Dhanush Responds To Nayanthara’s Accusations
Dhanush has given them 24 hours to remove the contents of NRD movie from the documentary. If not, then #Nayanthara, @VigneshShivN and @NetflixIndia will have to face legal actions, and will also be subjected to a 10cr damage pay.

Dhanush’s lawyer has issued a statement and addressed the issue. The statement reads,
“My client is the producer of the film and they know where they have spent each penny for the production of the film. Your client has stated that my client has not commissioned any person to shoot the behind-the-scenes footage and the said statement is baseless. Your client is put to strict proof of the same.”
Dhanush’s lawyer emphasized that the BTS footage belongs to Dhanush as the producer, not to the individual who recorded it. The legal team has also advised Nayanthara and her team to remove the allegedly infringing content from the documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. Failure to do so within 24 hours would compel Dhanush to initiate legal proceedings. He will seek damages of Rs 10 crore against both Nayanthara and Netflix India. The statement concluded,
“Advise your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ by using the same in your client’s documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale’ within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs 10 crores against your client and Netflix India.”
At its heart, this isn’t just a story about Nayanthara and Dhanush. It’s a story about ambition, relationships, and the challenges of navigating success in an industry where the personal is often inseparable from the professional.
