Instead, they wind up losing it all playing roulette. It is then that Redford swoops in, offers the couple $1 million if Moore will spend the night with him, which of course she does.
Truthfully, the movie is not a classic in any way, but the excitement of watching the ball spin around the wheel waiting to see if they will become winners is always a good source of entertainment. It is the ultimate example of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Unfortunately, a tired plot ruins the overall focus of this scene.
Diamonds Are Forever
It is not surprising that a James Bond movie would make this list. It seems like some of the best scenes in this series had Bond at a casino, matching wits against some sinister villain. In this particular movie, Bond, played by actor Sean Connery, plays roulette at the Whyte House Mansion. The roulette wheel presents the perfect unintrusive prop as Bond attempts to size up his adversary.
Run Lola Run
The person in desperate need of money is often the story that leads the person to the roulette wheel. They are hoping to make one big score, betting it all on one number in hopes that their financial woes will quickly end.
This was the case in Run Lola Run, where Lola, played by Franka Potente, is on a desperate mission to raise enough money to pay off the debt of her boyfriend. She is desperate, believing that her chances of reaching the goal are passing quickly, so she turns to the roulette wheel. In this scene, she places her 100-mark chip on the board, hoping that number 22 will come up. Unlike the Indecent Proposal, Lola hits, winning the needed money.
These scenes usually end with the person losing everything they had. So, it was nice to see one film that provided a happy winner.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Steve Martin and Michael Caine movie is filmed on the French Riviera. The goal of the two scoundrels is to swindle a rich woman out of all of her money, and what better backdrop in which to do it than this famous French location.
In one scene, Martin, who is pretending to be an invalid in a wheelchair, is at the roulette wheel at a posh casino. Not to give the scene away, but there is a very humorous moment while they are waiting for the little white ball to land on the number. If you have not seen it before, it is worth a couple of hours to watch.
Casablanca
By any standards, this is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time. It starred Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Bogart is the owner of the bar who is helping his former love, played by Bergman, escape from the Nazi-occupied city with her new husband.
Oddly enough, there is a roulette scene where they are betting on number 22. The hope is that they will win enough money to get out of the city and on their way back to America. Clearly, in the movie genre, number 22 is the right choice.
While there are other great roulette scenes, these ones stand out. They have supplied humor, drama, and intrigue. Sadly, some movies did not live up to the grandeur of this casino-style game. I guess a roulette wheel can only do so much to save a movie.
