The anti-smoking ad featuring Akshay Kumar will no longer be seen in theatres. The anti-smoking ad is popularly referred to as the Nandu ad. The reports reveal that the Censor Board has pulled down the ad. The move to take down the ad is still questionable. However, it has been reported that the ad will be replaced with an anti-tobacco ad.
The Nandu ad was missing from the recent releases Jigra and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. The decision to remove the ad was taken last month and the reports claim that a new ad that shows the positive impact of quitting tobacco is being played instead of the previous one.
No More Nandu Ad?
The Multiplex official told the leading portal that people would miss the ad. “It was my favorite anti-smoking ad as it gave out an important message without disturbing visuals. It also used to be amusing to see moviegoers repeating the dialogue from the ad. After all, they were watching the ad for 6 years. The moviegoers had memorized all its lines! I am sure I am and many other moviegoers will surely miss the ad.”
The ad features Akshay Kumar and Ajay Singh Pal who played Nandu. The ad featured Nandu smoking a cigarette while discussing his wife’s hygiene problems. Coincidently Akshay Kumar as Padman also starred in an ad that drew focus on women’s hygiene and menstrual issues. Akshay says how he could use the money spent on buying two cigarettes on sanitary pads instead. These public announcements were made mandatory in 2012 by the Health Ministry. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had made it compulsory to be run out at the beginning of every film and after the intermission. In 2018, CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) recommended the Nandu ad, featuring Akshay and Ajay Singh Pal (Nandu), to be shown in films with smoking scenes.
