Depp sued Heard for libel in the defamation trial. It took place in the spring of 2022, citing a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp, who was married to Heard from 2015 to 2016, requested $50 million in the claim. Heard subsequently filed a countersuit for $100 million, claiming that Depp had harmed her career. Finally, the jury found Heard guilty of three counts of slander against Depp, giving him $10 million in compensation and $5 million in punitive damages. Depp was also held responsible for one count of slander against Hear. She was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.

Heard and Depp filed initial appeal documents, but the case was eventually settled in December 2022, with Heard making a $1 million payment to Depp. “I have made no admission,” Heard claimed in an Instagram statement at the time. This is not a sign of weakness. Moving forward, there are no constraints or gags on my voice.” Meanwhile, according to a June report in People, Depp intends to donate the settlement money to five charities.

More On The Docuseries

Depp v. Heard, according to Netflix, is a limited series directed by Emma Cooper that takes a dispassionate look at the case and what it says about the “court of public opinion.” It will consist of three episodes, each including footage from the court case and current news coverage, social media coverage, and “citizen commentators.” The show’s goal is to highlight “provocative, uncomfortable questions about how conversations happening outside the courtroom may have influenced the outcome.”

Furthermore, many public relations professionals and legal analysts speculated that Depp and Heard’s case could create an uneasy precedent for future abuse complaints. Many feared that victims would be more afraid than ever to come forward and that more powerful men would seek retaliation in court against their accusers. Many news outlets have now connected Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce to that of Depp and Heard.

Depp v. Heard will be available on Netflix on Wednesday, August 16. What do you think about this upcoming docuseries? Will you watch it? Let us know your opinions in the comments below. We await your response!
