Kanguva is a story about a connection between a village warrior and a young kid in 1070, who are reunited in 2024 under mysterious circumstances in 2024. The complete movie runs between two timelines. Actor Suriya plays a double role of Francis from 2024 and Kanguva from 1070. The movie starts with Francis, a bounty hunter operating from Goa who works for his livelihood. During one of his bounty hunts, he starts looking for a child Zeta who reminds him about his past.

This takes us to 1070, in the life of a tribal warrior prince known as Kanga, aka Kanguva. Kanguva is facing a threat from the Romans as they want to vanquish and conquer his village. As the film flows, it keeps going back and forth between two timelines, 1070 and 2024. Despite being centuries apart in life, what connects Kanguva and Franciz, and how it is related to their future? Watch the film to find out. But, do we need to? Read our review before making a decision.

Kanguva Movie Review

To be brutally honest, Kanguva is one of the weakest films of Suriya in recent times. The movie unnecessarily jumps between two timelines. This chaos impacts the emotional connection that needs to be built. The plot of the movie has many issues and predictability is one of those. The background score is too loud and sometimes it becomes unbearable. Even the dialogues are too loud, especially in the Hindi dub. This all makes it very irritating to watch and loses its essence.

The cinematography from Vetri Palanisamy is top-notch. Also, the editing by the late Nishadh Yusuf is superb. Yes, Kanguva has interesting fight scenes, and watching those in 3D gives you a good experience. There are some emotional scenes in the movie, along with the grand visuals. But the biggest problem is everything lacks clarity.

In terms of performance, Suriya is fantastic in a dual role. His character as tribal warrior avatar Kanguva is better characterized than Francis. Bobby Deol as the antagonist did a good job. But he has been underutilized. Even, Disha Patani does not have much to do in the film. Also, the other starcast does not provide anything worth in the film.

The shoddy screenplay and predictable plot with poor execution make the film unbearable. Overall, the movie is too messy and chaotic. In this chaos of two centuries, no emotional connection is built between the characters and thus audience also cannot feel involved. The main theme of the movie a connection between a village warrior and a young kid is also not given proper screen time and narration.

Final Verdict

Suriya in Kanguva

Kanguva tries to be a magnum opus film. However, the lack of a storyline, tiring screenplay, and too loud BGM and dialogues harm the film most. Even Suriya’s performance cannot save this sinking ship. If you are a die-hard fan of Suriya, you can watch this film, or else you can avoid it. We rate this movie 2 stars out of 5.
