“Merry Christmas,” a gripping 2024 thriller, is under the directorial helm of Sriram Raghavan. This cinematic masterpiece unfolds its suspenseful narrative in both Hindi and Tamil, featuring stellar performances by Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. The film also signifies the Tamil debut of Sriram Raghavan, Katrina Kaif, and the famous composer Pritam. Adding another layer of significance, this marks Vijay Sethupathi’s third venture into Hindi cinema. Meanwhile, after a series of delays, “Merry Christmas” finally graced the theaters on January 12, 2024.
Merry Christmas Movie Story
The entirety of the movie unfolds during a single December night in the era when Mumbai was still known as Bombay. Meanwhile, Albert, portrayed by Sethupathi, makes a comeback to the city after a long absence. Fate intervenes as he unexpectedly encounters Maria, played by Katrina Kaif, along with her young daughter Annie.
Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the night, these two strangers forge a connection and find solace in each other’s company. However, given the signature style of a Raghavan film, unforeseen twists and turns lie ahead for both characters. As the Christmas dawn approaches, surprises unfurl, including an unexpected visit from law enforcement.
Merry Christmas Review
Following the successes of “Badlapur” and “Andhadhun,” Sriram Raghavan unveils another cinematic gem in “Merry Christmas.” What sets this apart is Raghavan’s approach, crafting an entertaining film rather than solely relying on thrills, giving it a distinctive edge. Additionally, the hallmark of Raghavan’s films lies in the crucial role played by the background music. “Merry Christmas” is no exception, with Daniel B. George delivering a commendable score that adds depth to this thrilling love story.
The interplay of lights and darkness also serves as visual poetry, skillfully conveying emotions and significant moments. Portraying subtle emotions while preserving the mystery in a suspenseful narrative is challenging for actors. However, Katrina Kaif excels in this aspect, delivering a truly delightful performance. Vijay Sethupathi, a master of controlled acting, also flawlessly navigates each sequence, enhancing numerous moments with his dialogue delivery.
Tinnu Raaj Anand and Sanjay Kapoor excel in their respective roles, while Radhika Apte, treated as a lucky charm, maintains her consistently high standard. Vinay Pathak and Pratima Kazmi, portraying the police characters, also bring a fun element to the movie. While “Merry Christmas” is not flawless and may seem predictable sometimes, it remains engaging. The only hiccup might be the perception of the interval arriving a tad too early in the narrative.
Final Verdict
Vijay’s effortless delivery of humor-laden lines, Katrina’s flawless character, and Sriram’s directorial finesse elevate the movie to a must-watch status. The delicate balance between thrill and love is skillfully maintained. Despite minor imperfections, the exceptional background music and other strengths compensate for them. We give Merry Christmas 3.5 stars out of 5.
